WebJedediah Hotchkiss (1828-1899) was a Confederate army officer, topographical and mining engineer, and historian. Collection contains more than three hundred cartographic items made by Hotchkiss during the Civil War and the post-war years. Civil War maps include detailed battle maps, sketch books, and some general regional maps, chiefly in Virginia. In October 1865, “a Federal detective confronted Hotchkiss with a military order to confiscate his map collection.” Hotchkiss flatly declined to obey the mandate and despite Federal pressure, was able to retain ownership of all his charts.
